An outbreak in Sioux City of diarrhea-causing bacteria called Shigella has now reached 105 cases.
The illness reports started in early October, and have impacted school and daycare age children the most with over 60% of victims being 10 years old or younger.
Tyler Brock of Siouxland District Health says since the bacteria is transmitted by contact, many adults have contracted the illness as well:
Over half of the cases have come from the 51103 zip code area of Sioux City.
Brock says Shigella bacteria is highly infectious and the spread is continuing because symptoms vary and people do not realize that they have Shigella before they pass it on to others.
Also, people are still infectious after symptoms resolve and if their infection went untreated, they are still a risk to spread it to others.
Brock says antibiotics have generally been effective in resolving the infection.
