Sioux City Police chief Doug Young was in Ankeny Wednesday, testifying at the Iowa Department of Transportation public hearing on proposed rules to regulate red light and speed cameras.
Young says Sioux City turned to mobile speed cameras after many complaints about problems in the construction zones along Interstate 29:
Young says they did the same thing with their red light cameras and the data supported their use.
The city went to court and won a ruling against the D-O-T that the speed cameras were not an obstruction in the construction zone.
Young says the proposed new rules will hurt their efforts to improve the safety of the interstate traffic:
The members of the D-O-T listened to the comments, but did not respond during the hearing.
They will review the comments made at the hearing along with submitted written comments.
The rules would also have to be given approval by a legislative committee before final adoption.
