A smoke alarm sounded and woke up two occupants in a home on Sioux City's northside, allowing them to safely escape an early morning house fire Friday.
Smoke was coming from the two story wood frame home at 2501 Jennings when firefighters arrived around 2:45am.
The fire was located on the front porch of the home and had spread to the crawl space and basement.
The fire was quickly extinguished with minor fire and smoke damage to the home.
The occupants, Corey and Genell Reinert, were able to remain in the home.
Investigators say the cause of this fire was a cigarette which was discarded in a potted plant which ignited organic materials and the plastic pot, which then spread to the structure.
