One of the best known airplanes from World War Two, the B-17 Flying Fortress, will be in Sioux City this weekend for flights and tours as part of this year’s Transportation Expo.

The bomber is owned and operated by the Experimental Aircraft Association of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and will be at the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation June 27, 28 and 29th.

Air museum director Larry Finley says the bomber has a rich history:

OC…THAT NAME. ;25

More than 12,000 of these bombers were built during the early 1940s, with over 4,000 were lost during the war, mostly in high-danger bombing missions over Europe.

The weekend will also feature a Fly-In Pancake Breakfast and I-29 Shriner’s Vintage Wheels from 8am until noon on Sunday.

Tickets for the events are at the Air Museum at 2600 Expedition Drive just off Harbor Drive at the north end of the Sioux City Airport.
