A GROUP OF PILOTS WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY DURING THE VIETNAM WAR ARE IN SIOUX CITY FOR A SPECIAL REUNION.

THEY FLEW F-100 FIGHTERS FOR SIOUX CITY’S 185TH TACTICAL FIGHTER GROUP OF THE IOWA AIR NATIONAL GUARD.

DUDLEY SMIDT WAS ONE OF THOSE PILOTS SENT OVERSEAS IN JANUARY OF 1968.

NOW A RETIRED GENERAL, SMIDT, WHO LATER SERVED AS 185TH COMMANDER FROM 1980-83, SAYS IT’S THE FIRST REUNION IN 45 YEARS FOR THE PILOTS WHO SERVED TOGETHER FOR A 17 MONTH TOUR OF DUTY:

THE 185TH WAS CALLED TO ACTIVE DUTY WHEN THE U.S.S. PUEBLO WAS SEIZED BY NORTH KOREA.

THEY WERE INSTEAD SENT TO VIETNAM WHERE SMIDT FLEW 257 COMBAT MISSIONS.

WHEN THE 185TH RETURNED HOME, THEY RECEIVED A HEROES WELCOME, UNLIKE OTHER RETURNING VIETNAM VETERANS WHO WERE LOOKED DOWN UPON:

ONE OF THE 185TH PILOTS DIED IN ACTION IN VIETNAM.

1ST LIEUTENANT WARREN BROWN WAS KILLED FLYING NEAR THE SHAU VALLEY ON JULY 14TH OF 1968.

TWO OTHERS, SGT. HAROLD BERG AND MASTER SGT. GERALD KRACHTOVIL DIED FROM NON-COMBAT INJURIES

THE PILOTS GATHERED THURSDAY MORNING AT THE REPLICA OF THE VIETNAM MEMORIAL AT FREEDOM PARK IN SOUTH SIOUX CITY TO REMEBER THEIR COMRADES.

THEY ALSO TOURED THE 185TH BASE NEAR SIOUX GATEWAY AIRPORT WHICH IS NOW HOME TO KC-135 REFUELERS.
