THE IOWA POISON CONTROL CENTER IS HEADQUARTERED IN SIOUX CITY AND FACES A 440-THOUSAND DOLLAR DEFICIT.

IT SERVES AS AN INFORMATION CLEARINGHOUSE FOR THE ENTIRE STATE.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PAYS FOR THE STATEWIDE TOLL-FREE HOTLINE, BUT THE DOCTOR AND 12 FULL-TIME NURSES ON STAFF ARE PAID BY A COMBINATION OF STATE FUNDS AND PRIVATE DONATIONS.

KALIN SAYS FOR EVERY DOLLAR SPENT ON THE POISON CONTROL CENTER, 16 DOLLARS IN HEALTH CARE COSTS ARE SAVED BECAUSE THE CENTER’S STAFF HELPS CALLERS AVOID A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM.

OC…..IS GREAT. :22

THERE ARE 56 OTHER POISON CENTERS IN THE U.S. AND A FEDERAL REPORT INDICATES NEARLY ALL OF THEM FACE BUDGET CHALLENGES.
