AN ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE HAS BEEN DETERMINED AS THE CAUSE OF DEATH FOR A MAN WHO DIED DURING A TRAFFIC STOP IN DAKOTA CITY LAST YEAR.

DAKOTA COUNTY ATTORNEY KIM WATSON SAYS MATTHEW AHLSTEN WAS A PASSENGER IN A VEHICLE THAT LAW ENFORCEMENT STOPPED ON NOVEMBER 3RD.

DURING THE STOP, AHLSTEN SEEMED TO EXPERIENCE A MEDICAL EVENT AND DIED AT THE SCENE.
AN AUTOPSY SHOWS AHLSTEN’S CAUSE OF DEATH WAS METHAMPHETAMINE TOXICITY.

AHLSTEN HAD DIED “WHILE BEING APPREHENDED BY OR WHILE IN THE CUSTODY OF A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OR DETENTION PERSONNEL.”

WITH THAT CERTIFICATION, A GRAND JURY FOUND THERE WAS NO CRIMINAL CONDUCT THAT CONTRIBUTED TO AHLSTEN’S DEATH.
