The Grandparent Scam is in full swing again in this area.

The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office is receiving calls from grandparents reporting that they are the focus of this age old scam.

If you are a grandparent or family member of someone who calls you desperate for money because they are in a serious situation, please confirm their identity and talk to other family members prior to sending or wiring money.

The scam has many other angles such as an attorney, law enforcement officer, or hospital employee making the call explaining the family member needs money for one reason or another.

These scam artists can catch the victim off-guard or at a weak moment and convince them to send money without ever confirming the actual whereabouts of the grandchild or family member.

You should make follow-up calls to confirm the story and speak with other family members who would know the actual location of the loved one.

Also, never give out personal information over the phone. Reputable businesses will never ask for personal information over the phone.
