Talk Radio 1360 am – Sioux City, Iowa

THE CITY COUNCIL OF SIOUX CITY FINALIZED THEIR PROPOSED OPERATING BUDGET FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR.

THE TAX BITE TO LOCAL HOMEOWNERS WON’T BE AS BAD AS INITIALLY THOUGHT THOUGH.

MAYOR BOB SCOTT SAYS THE LEVY WILL BE $16.37 PER $1000 OF ASSESSED RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUE, AN INCREASE IN TAXES OF $31.00.

$25 OF THAT IS BECAUSE OF A CHANGE IN THE STATE ROLLBACK FORMULA:

OC…..STATE LEGISLATURE. :10

EARLY IN THE BUDGET PROCESS, THE PROJECTED LEVY WAS $17.44 PER $1000, WHICH WOULD HAVE MEANT AN $83 INCREASE. BUDGET CUTS BROUGHT THAT FIGURE DOWN.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY TAX PAYERS GOT BETTER NEWS, THEY WILL SEE A $69 REDUCTION IN WHAT THEY PAY COMPARED TO LAST FISCAL YEAR.

THE CITY WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE BUDGET ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH.

MAYOR SCOTT THEN CRITICIZED WOODBURY COUNTY’S BUDGET PROCESS, SAYING COUNTY SUPERVISORS HAD NOT FOLLOWED CITY ATTEMPTS TO REDUCE TAXES AND COMBINE SOME SERVICES.

OC……COUNTY ASSESSORS OFFICE. :19

SCOTT SAYS THE COUNTY AND CITY COULD SAVE A COMBINED $300-THOUSAND DOLLARS BY COMBINING THE TWO ASSESSORS OFFICES.

THE MAYOR IS ALSO UPSET OVER CITY TAXPAYERS FOOTING THE BILL FOR COUNTY DEPUTY PATROLS:

OC……POLICE DEPARTMENT. ;14

SCOTT SAYS HE HAS E-MAILED THE COUNTY TO DISCUSS THOSE ISSUES, BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED.
